Hair Transplant Scabs

At our clinic, we understand that the formation of scabs after a hair transplant may raise concerns. However, scabbing is a completely normal and essential part of the healing process. Here’s everything you need to know about scabs and how to care for your scalp to ensure the best results.

Hair Transplant Scabs

Why Do Scabs Form After a Hair Transplant?

After your hair transplant, tiny scabs will form at the sites where grafts were implanted. These scabs develop because:

  • The small incisions made during the procedure need to heal.
  • Blood and plasma naturally dry and harden to create a protective layer over these sites.
  • This layer safeguards the newly implanted grafts while the skin regenerates underneath.

How Long Do Scabs Last?

In most cases, scabs will naturally fall off within 7 to 10 days after the procedure. This timeline may vary slightly depending on how well you follow your aftercare routine and your skin’s healing ability.

How to Care for Scabs Properly

We provide all patients with detailed aftercare instructions, but here are some general tips to help manage scabs:

  1. Avoid Picking or Scratching
    • While scabs may cause itching, resist the urge to touch, pick, or scratch them. Doing so can damage the grafts and potentially affect your results.
  2. Follow the Washing Guidelines
    • Start washing your scalp as instructed, usually 48-72 hours after the procedure.
    • Use the specialized shampoo and lotion we provide.
    • Gently apply the shampoo with your fingertips—avoid rubbing or applying pressure.
  3. Softening the Scabs
    • Before washing, apply the recommended lotion to soften the scabs. Leave it on for 30-45 minutes, and rinse with lukewarm water.
  4. Dry Gently
    • After washing, pat your scalp dry with a soft towel. Avoid vigorous rubbing.

What to Expect as Scabs Fall Off

As the scabs start to loosen and fall off:

  • You might notice some hairs shedding with the scabs. This is entirely normal and part of the natural growth cycle.
  • Don’t worry—new hair growth will begin approximately 3-4 months after the procedure.

When Should You Be Concerned?

While most patients experience no complications with scabbing, contact us immediately if you notice:

  • Excessive redness or swelling around the scabs.
  • Persistent scabs beyond two weeks.
  • Any signs of infection, such as pus or unusual discharge.
